(Valdosta Mayor 1930) John Robert Dasher

John Robert Dasher (1930)

John Robert Dasher, Sr., son of James Alexander Dasher and Marietta Ihly, was born in Lowndes County on September 23, 1877. He attended the public schools in Valdosta and earned his law degree at Emory University. He married Mary (Mamie) Coffee. Embarking on an early business career, he entered the naval stores industry and became a prominent figure, partnering with Dr. E.P. Rose in many turpentine enterprises in this section. He also engaged in important farming operations, real estate transactions and other business. He was president of the Rotary Club, member of the board of directors and president of the Chamber of Commerce, member of the board of trustees of Georgia State Women’s College (Now Valdosta State University), member of the Valdosta board of education and was general chairman of the campaign committee which established Emory Junior College in Valdosta. His race for mayor was his first entry into politics, but he was always interested in the growth of Valdosta and the welfare of its citizens. Mr. Dasher died on November 7, 1930, while serving as mayor. His unexpired term was filled by Philip C. Pendleton.
