H.B Edwards, Sr. (1946-1948)

Hobart Baird Edwards, Sr., was born July 22, 1897 in Mars Hill, N.C. He attended Mars Hill College and the University of North Carolina, receiving his law degree from Atlanta Law School in 1923. A veteran of WWI, he returned from service school in Hahira, Ga., where he met and married Louelle Hodges. After receiving a degree in law, he opened an office in Valdosta and represented Lowndes County for 6 terms in the House of Georgia General Assembly. He was also judge of the city court of Valdosta from 1949-1953. A member of the American Legion, he served as commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars, was a member of Lee Street Baptist Church, the Lions Club, and the Moos Club of Valdosta. Noted for his courtroom aggressiveness, he fought strongly in the interests of his clients and earned himself the nickname “Hell Bent Edwards.” Mr. Edwards died on March 22, 1959 in Miami, Florida. He is buried in Sunset Hill cemetery in Valdosta.
