Cutwork, Corner of Handkerchief (2012-61 Tb13)

Cutwork and embroidered corner of a handkerchief
16 inch square
Eager Collection, Lowndes County Historical Museum

This cutwork and embroidered handkerchief that bears the initials “JG” belonged to and was most likely worked by Juliette M. Guilloteau (1887-1983), a native of Blois, France. She became governess of the young Dorothy Hopkins (Mrs. William G. Eager Jr.). After the death of Dorothy’s parents, Juliette raised her. In her later years, Juliette lived with Mr. and Mrs. William G. Eager Jr. in the Crestwood home in Valdosta. She was a gifted seamstress and embroiderer and made many of the Eager children’s clothing. She is buried in Sunset Hill Cemetery. This handkerchief is currently on display in the museum.
