Knitted Lace with Machine Embroidered Lace Insertion (78-201 Tb22)

Knitted lace insertion is 2 inches wide. The knitted edging is 2 1/2 inches wide. (Kathryn Ulmer Collection, Lowndes County Historical Museum)

This piece of lace originally was the edging to an ankle length cotton petticoat that additionally had knitted lace insertion and tucks. When the petticoat was altered into a shorter length skirt this piece was removed from the bottom edge and an elastic waistband was added to the top of the skirt. Fortunately though, the lace and the skirt were preserved together to tell the story of its many years of service. This piece of the original skirt edging is now on display at the museum.
