Whole Cloth Applique Quilt (2010-48Tb 45)

The colored fabrics used to make the designs in this applique quilt are stitched to a whole cloth as opposed to blocks which then must be stitched together to make the quilt top. John Deming III said his sister thought this quilt was made by Sampson Brewer Barfield (1853-1918). According to family legend, Sampson was kicked by a horse which left him paralyzed from the waist down. He therefore was able to spend many hours making quilts. He won several first prizes in fairs for his quilts. Deming Collection-Lowndes County Historical Museum
